Setting up your mobile

Looking forward to seeing your new mobile in action? Let’s get you up and running quicksmart. Just follow these three simple steps.

1. Love thy number

If you’ve become attached to your mobile number, just bring it with you. Once we’ve agreed a switching date, the process usually takes just one working day! All you have to do is:

1. Call your existing service provider and ask for your Port Authorisation Code (PAC).
2. Give us a call on 0345 6000 789* and we’ll do the rest. It’s as simple as that!

2. Get the message with voicemail

We don’t want you to miss an important message from your mum, so your voicemail should already be active as soon as you start using your phone. If not, don’t worry – it’s really easy to set it up yourself:

1. Dial 222 from your mobile, listen to the message and hang up.
2. Keep your phone on for 20 minutes. If you get a text that says PERS, ignore it.
3. After 20 minutes, turn your phone off and on again.
4. You’re all set up!

While you’re at it, why not set up a PIN so nobody else can access your voicemail?

1. Call your voicemail (usually this means holding down the ’1’ key on your phone).
2. Choose option 2 from the first menu (‘change mailbox features’) and follow the instructions.

3. Connect to WiFi to save your data

It’s always a good idea to connect your mobile to WiFi. If you have to pay for your data (i.e. if your tariff comes with a data limit), you won’t get charged. Plus, you should get faster speeds – especially if it’s Virgin Media WiFi.

Just go into your phone’s settings, select your WiFi network and enter the password. Or, if you’ve got an Android phone, download our WiFi Buddy app and it’ll help you connect to your nearest network in a jiffy.

4. Start using Your Account

Your Account is your own online area where you can manage everything to do with your Virgin Mobile account. See how many minutes or texts you have left this month, take a look at your bill, check your phone works abroad, activate voicemail and much more.

5. Set up web, email and picture messaging

If you have a smartphone, you can do lots of cool things online, like browsing the web, sending emails and picture messages. To do all that, you’ll need to find your phone in the list and download the settings. (Note: you’ll need to send a picture message before you can start receiving them, so give it a go!)

6. Pimp your mobile

Now you’ve got your phone, why not grab yourself one of our cool accessories to go with it? From cases and covers to headphones and speakers, we’ve got the lot.

7. Emoji's in your texts

We all love an emoticon or emoji in a text. Sometimes the only way to say thanks to mum is with a heart icon. And that birthday message to your mate? Of course it needs a cake and balloon combo. Plus, let us not forget the wonder of the poop emoji… The trouble is, some smartphones are converting regular text with emoticons into picture messages, which are charged at a higher rate and could lead to some surprising bills.

If you're worried about this make sure you check your monthly bills. And if you think you're affected, why not try using a text messaging service like WhatsApp? It's also worth knowing that some smartphones charge the same as a picture message when you send a text to multiple people.
