Where technology fits in

Although we’ll always do our best to provide families with excellent parental control tools, it’s important to remember that no technology provides 100% protection from all the potential risks kids face online. Just like in the real world, where there are road laws, traffic lights and zebra crossings, you still teach your kids to look left and right when they cross the road and hold their hand when they’re little.

Because keeping your kids safe online is as much about parenting as it is about technology, we’ve been working with the experts at The Parent Zone on the practical steps you can take to keep your family safe on the web. Like the Switched On Families Playbook, it’s an interactive guide containing clear, honest and practical advice filtered by your child’s stage of development.

Tips for using your tools

Parental controls can help you manage what your kids get up to online, especially when they’re young. Different tools work in different ways, so to make sure your family is getting the best protection from them:

For network-based tools, like Web Safe:

  • Be aware which devices allow web access outside your home network. For example, Web Safe will work with any devices using your home broadband network but not if you’re using 3G on smartphones or tablets.
  • Remember that controls will only work on devices connected to your home broadband with parental controls activated. If your kids are using the web at other people’s homes, they may not be protected in the same way.

For software solutions, like F-Secure SAFE:

  • If you’re buying a new device for your home, ask the shop to show you how the parental controls work for that make and model.
  • Install parental controls on any devices you give to your kids before you hand them over – it’ll be much easier than taking them away again!
  • Remember to update the settings on your kids’ devices so that as they get older, the controls you use can adapt to their stage of development.

Things to know

The web’s packed with fun and knowledge for your kids to explore. But just like in the real world, there are things we all need to watch out for.
